After the summer holidays, this month seems to be rather quiet, a lot of people have returned home and the children are back at school.
Local News, well, as usually I have been reading everything but nothing really exciting has surfaced from this. Needless to say I shall try to let you know of a few things that I have read this month.
As you might have heard we have had some heavy rain and some flooding over the last couple of weeks. Luckily, not too bad in Alcaidesa compared to other places but we had to check properties and pleased to say only found minor water problems.
As all you golfers are aware the Volvo Masters is approaching but there are also other competitions happening locally. Leaving the Volvo Master aside there is one that stands out and this is in Alcaidesa. It is the 21st Individual Championship of Andalucia. This Championship takes place between October 22nd and 27th and includes an 18-hole practice round, 54 stroke play holes over three consecutive days, plus a Pro-am in which representatives of the national and international media and those from golf-specialized wholesale and travel agents will take part.
Alcaidesa Links Golf Club Resort thus becomes the premier club in October, not just because of the inauguration of a new course there, named The Valleys, designed by famed Dave Thomas. There is also a ceremony to take place there on Wednesday 24th after the first day’s play. Then a grand celebratory party is to be held on the 27th with an ample programme of activities and is sure to have a large number of guests.
PS. Guess who has got an invite to the party!!

San Roque looks set to be the location for Arsenal FC’s first Spanish football academy. Negotiations are in the final stages between the club’s School of Soccer and the San Roque Town Council. The agreement for use of the municipalities sporting facilities is expected to be signed in the next few weeks with the 1st of October being projected as the start date.
Guadiaro and Puente Mayorga will be the initial grounds used by the academy and Arsenal have already sent a number of staff, including Alan Sefton and Benjamin Corbin, over to prepare the first 20 trainers who will coach the youngsters.
The driving force behind this initiative has been CD Guadiaro’s Director, Ken Jones, who is keen to continue the links between San Roque and the London club, with CD Guadiaro also having participated in the Arsenal International Soccer Festival in Surrey this summer.
If you like to take a walk, I read that the Mediterranean Steps have reopened in Gibraltar. The Mediterranean Steps are one of the Upper Rock’s most wondrous and awe-inspiring nature walks. This is a 1,400-metre climb so not for the faint-hearted, from 180 metres at the Jews’ gate to the 410 metres above sea level at O’Hara’s Battery.
How about ascending this instead of riding the cable car to the top. Do this at your own pace and stop at any time to catch the breath taking views and then maybe take the cable car down. If you do this please let us know what you thought about the climb and how difficult it was!!
La Línea is to strengthen its municipal environmental police squad from four to eight officers and also to put an official in charge of their work to ensure better co-ordination. The councilor for local security, Francisco Muñiz, says this is in response to pressure from local residents. The enlarged force will strictly monitor compliance with the municipal regulations on cleaning including fouling of the streets by dogs and in addition will oversee the by-laws governing animal protection and ownership.
The council is making more places available for civil weddings to make Tarifa an even more attractive venue for getting married and also boost the financial spin-offs for local businesses. Currently weddings are only performed at the town hall during normal business hours on a Monday to Friday basis. Under new regulations civil marriages can also be held on the last Saturday of the month between 10.30 and 13.30. However in future the venue for weddings does not have to be limited to the town hall. Hotels, restaurants or private properties in the municipality can also be used for civil ceremonies although certain conditions will apply. A meeting will be held in the near future to brief businesses on the new wedding regulations and how they can boost their turnover.
Also a study of the property market in Cadiz shows that Tarifa has the highest price per square metre. An average house in Tarifa would sell for around 400,000 euros. Tarifa is second on the list after Zahara de los Atunes, where the average is 503,332, with La Línea being placed fourth on 295,171, Los Barrios sixth with 295,050 and Algeciras tenth at 221,171 euros. According to the survey, the average price for a 90.3 square metre house in Cadiz province is now said to be 289,449 euros.
I was reading an article in the Express Guide about Death Duty, well I found out some interesting things. Now ladies if our hubbies die in Spain and we do not want to pay Death Duty apparently it is easy:
1 - If he drops dead we just put him in the car and drive over the boarder into Gibraltar and if he dies in Gib. we pay no tax!
2 - We just bury him in the garden and apparently if we can keep the death unknown for 4 years then we pay no tax!
I have given thought to both of these solutions and No. 1, how would I on my own get him into the car? No. 2, maybe if I have a cardboard cut out of my hubby the children would not miss their dad for four years! Anyway I have come up with the perfect idea, you know the film ‘The First Wife’s Club’ how about the ‘Dead Husband’s Club’ anyone interested just email me to join!!!!
Now to finish I shall tell you that unfortunately we do have a problem in Spain with abandoned animals. They do try to find homes here for them and a lot of the dogs go abroad to be re-homed.
A two month old cat was abandoned in our road two weeks ago and sadly was moved from house to house. When she reached my house we thought of the best solution for her. For a house pet she was not in very good condition, she had a mark where a very tight collar had been, was very thin and we thought she had lost an eye. We could either take her in the hill above my house to die or just get a hammer and put her out of her misery. I returned into my house to get the hammer, what decision would you have made?
OK maybe I did not use the hammer and maybe you would be right in thinking that the picture below is of the stray cat that happens to be called Rusty and is now happily recovering well and living with us. This is much to the dislike of my fat spoilt cat Tinkerbell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
